Patek Philippe 1518

The world of collectible watches is holding its breath. A steel Patek Philippe 1518 is about to appear at Phillips in Geneva on November 8 and 9, 2025, with an opening estimate of 8,000,000 euros. The question on every collector’s lips: what price will this next Patek Philippe 1518 reach?

An exceptional historical context

It feels like yesterday. In the middle of World War II, in 1941, Patek Philippe revolutionized watchmaking by introducing the first series-produced perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch. Before the 1518, this kind of complication was reserved for pocket watches or one-off prototypes.

Founded in Geneva by Antoni Patek and Adrien Philippe, Patek Philippe has embodied watchmaking excellence for nearly two centuries. The Geneva manufacture - hardly in need of an introduction - is recognized worldwide for its incomparable craftsmanship, its technical innovation and its absolute respect for tradition.

As one of the last independent family-owned houses, Patek Philippe has built its reputation on exceptional creations that pass through generations. The brand holds numerous auction records and continues to set the standards of haute horlogerie.

The Patek Philippe 1518: a very limited production

Between 1941 and 1954, only about 281 examples were made, a rarity that today makes up all of its value. The breakdown is as follows:

  • Yellow gold (the majority): around 215–220 pieces
  • Rose gold: around 50 pieces
  • Steel: only 4 known in steel!

This last category is the absolute grail for watch lovers. The four steel examples are legendary today and rank among the most expensive watches ever sold.

Technical specifications of the 1518

This exceptional watch has a 35 millimeter diameter and is manual-winding. It runs on a Patek 13’’’-130Q caliber.

Its complications are remarkable: chronograph, perpetual calendar with day, date, month and moon phase display. The look stands out for its total symmetry between the subdials and a typography typical of the 1940s. The dials were often entrusted to Stern Frères for their manufacture, guaranteeing exceptional quality.

A historic record in 2016, a new record to come

In 2016, the appearance of a steel 1518 stunned the market. Sold for more than 11 million CHF (nearly 12 million €) at Phillips, it became the most expensive wristwatch in history, the first to cross the eight-figure barrier. An absolute record at the time, putting this piece out of reach for the average collector.

The sale will take place in Geneva on November 8 and 9, 2025, and promises to be one of the highlights of the year in the world of collectible watches. With an opening estimate of 8,000,000 euros, all eyes will be on this extremely rare piece.

The steel Patek Philippe 1518 is not simply a watch: it is a piece of watchmaking history, a testament to technical and aesthetic excellence, and the ultimate symbol of luxury and rarity in the world of collecting.

The big question of the moment remains unanswered: what price will this next Patek Philippe 1518 reach? Only the sale will tell us.
