What I think of it
Aquastar REGATE from the ’70s: this watch was made for sailing regatta participants. From the color change of the dots, the sailor can see when the race starts.
The Aquastar brand was not only born from one man’s passion for the underwater world, but also reflects a period when, for the first time, the underwater world had become a major subject for everyone.
In 1961, JeanRichard filed a patent for a regatta watch with a 5-minute countdown. This patent is the “birth certificate” of the regatta yacht timer watches as they have been known all these years.
This 39 mm case with its “sunburst” finish houses an automatic Lemania 1345 movement with a regatta modification, a crown at 2 o’clock to set the time and a pusher at 4 o’clock for start/reset. The watch comes with a nice Swiss Tropic strap; these vintage Tropic straps are rare and therefore sought after.
The various Aquastar models will always be appreciated by collectors of fine divers from the ’60s–’70s. This Aquastar REGATE stands out from the brand’s other models with its chrono complication.
